The Armor of God

A study with Kenny Metcalf
September 1, 2005

I have heard many studies about the Armor of God as I'm sure many of you have as well.

In this study, I want to talk about the armor, but in a way you might have never thought about it.

As we spend time in God's word, reading it or listening to it, we open up ourselves to be personally taught by God's Holy Spirit.

Jesus said in John 16:13 “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth”.

Wow, God himself will personally teach and reveal His word to you.

Our Father desires total dependence on Him from you for everything!

Teaching you His word is only one of the many exciting things he has for those who seek him.

If you've never done this, it's simple… invite the Holy Spirit to teach you His word.

As you read His word or listen to His word, think about what you have just studied/heard.

Next, allow the Holy Spirit to challenge your mind. He might not even show you anything right away, he might reveal truth and secrets later as you meditate on what you studied. So it is important to think about what you read, but rest assured… He will teach you!

His word states it in John 16:13, and God cannot lie or go back on His word!

“ No Bible college degree needed if you enter into Gods school of His word being taught by Professor Holy Spirit”. :)

Whether you read or listen daily, both are valid & quality time spent in God's word.
His word is also more important than food itself… Matt 4:4 “man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God”.

TIP: I also listen to the word as I sleep. It goes into my subconscious mind and is recorded there as well.

The Holy Spirit can call back to your memory what you have placed there, so filler up!

I personally prefer listening over reading (whenever possible) because I have a vivid imagination and as I listen, I watch the word come alive in my minds eye.
Also in the old days, many could not read, and it was read to them, but scripturally the words states in Romans 10:17 “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

So faith will increase as you hear the word, and your spiritual hearing will increase as you apply yourself to learning His word.

It's also a good thing for you to read it out loud, so your ears hear your mouth proclaim Gods word, and your faith will also increase by your mouths own proclamation.

“Out of the abundance of your heart your mouth speaks”(Kenny version) or Matt 15:18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart;

Okay… let's get to today's study. This is one of my favorite studies to teach on. This was one of those teachings that the Holy Spirit revealed truth to me that I had not heard before. This study carries lots of truth in it. It will challenge you as well concerning those things you've been taught before or heard others say.

The Armor of God
A study with Kenny Metcalf
September 1, 2005

Our study will revolve around this text: Ephesians 6:10-17 (New King James Version)
But we will focus on verses 14-17

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

I have heard many things about God's armor... I've heard it said: “It only covers our front and not our back side, so we must always face our enemies.”

I've also heard: “I put my armor on everyday” or “I didn't put my armor on today”, and even… “the enemy continues to beat on my armor and wears holes in it, and God needs to repair it from time to time”.

Or even this one… “the enemy slips in through the chinks in the armor… those places where they are joined together”.

This study is going to challenge each one of those statements and even the ones not written here that you might know.

The armor of God is POWERFUL, IMPENETRABLE, INVINCIBLE, & every believer must understand the real TRUTH behind the armor.

Each piece has a strategic use, but this study is going to focus on why it is so POWERFUL. This will also liberate your mind to the power you have in your everyday living.

1) VS. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth.

Truth?
John 8:32 And ye shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free
Truth sets you free… that's wonderful news, but there's more.

John 14:6 Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the
truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

2) VS. 14 having put on the breastplate of righteousness

Righteousness?
Matt 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after
righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Matt 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for
righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Jer 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR
RIGHTEOUSNESS.

1 John 2:29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth
righteousness is born of him.

1 John 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth
righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

2 Tim 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow
righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1 Cor 1:33 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and
righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

1 Pet 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto
righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

3) VS. 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Peace?
Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and
peace.

Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of
peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Luke 10:6 And if the son of peace be there, your
peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.

Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and
peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

Romans 16:20 And the God of
peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Eph 2: 13-14 : But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. "14": For he is our
peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The
Prince of Peace.

4) VS.16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

Faith?

Romans 1:17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from
faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by
faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by
faith without the deeds of the law.
(who is our justification? Christ)

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
(if you don't believe in Christ you have no
faith)

Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of
faith, which we preach;
Christ is the word of faith)

Heb 10:38 Now the just shall live by
faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

Heb 11:6 But without
faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

1 Tim 1:19: Holding
faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Gal 2: 16: Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the
faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Gal 2: 20: I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the
faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Gal 3: 8: And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through
faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
(we are justified by Christ)

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the
faith of Jesus.

2 Tim 3: 15: And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through
faith which is in Christ Jesus.

5) VS.17 And take the helmet of salvation,

Salvation?

Psalms 3:8:
Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

Psalms 18:2: The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my
salvation, and my high tower.

Psalms 27:1 The LORD is my light and my
salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Luke 19:9 And Jesus said unto him, This day is
salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

1 Thes 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain
salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your
salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

6) VS.17and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

Word?

John 1:1- 4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2: The same was in the beginning with God.
3: All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4: In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Heb 2:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and
sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Quick recap
The Armor of God
A study with Kenny Metcalf
September 1, 2005

1) VS. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth.

Who is truth? “Jesus”

John 14:6 Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the
truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

So your waist (loins) is girded or wrapped (covered) around with “JESUS”.

2) VS. 14 having put on the breastplate of righteousness

Who is our Righteousness? “Jesus”

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his
righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Who is the Kingdom of God? “Jesus” is the Kingdom of God.
Who is your righteousness? “Jesus” is our Righteousness

3) VS. 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of Peace

Who is our Peace? “Jesus”

Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The
Prince of Peace.

4) VS.16 above all, taking the shield of faith

Who is our Faith? “Jesus”

Rev 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the
faith of Jesus.

5) VS.17 And take the helmet of salvation,

Who is our Salvation? “Jesus”

Psalms 27:1 The LORD is my light and my
salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

6) VS.17and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;

Who is the sword of the Spirit? "Jesus"

John 1:1- 4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2: The same was in the beginning with God.
3: All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4: In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Replace the word “WORD” with Jesus' name Jesus is the Word of God, and the Sword of the Spirit.

I hope this study has revealed something new to you today about the Armor of God.

Each piece is JESUS.

You put Jesus on and NEVER take him off.

Jesus covers you completely!

If you ever take your armor off, you have back slidden!

Your armor cannot be pierced because Christ will not allow himself to be crucified or pierced again.

He is POWERFUL, IMPENETRABLE, INVINCIBLE! And there are no chinks in Him!

So, put on the FULL ARMOR of God, “Jesus”.

This is what the Holy Spirit showed me as I read his word.

There are plenty more scriptures to back up this writing, so have fun digging for more Jesus/Truth :)
